June 21st is #ShowYourStripes day

#ShowYourStripes day is coming up — on June 21st, the summer (or winter) solstice in the Northern Hemisphere — a day to spread awareness about climate change using the iconic warming stripes graphics that show temperature trends over the last 100+ years.

A series of vertical colored stripes representing global annual average temperatures from 1850 to the present. The colors transition from deep blue (cooler years) on the left to deep red (hotter years) on the right, visually illustrating the steady rise in global temperatures over time.

A Hands-On Tool to Understand the Climate Crisis

Recently, I attended my 30th-year MIT reunion and had the chance to hear some excellent lectures from MIT professors. One of them was a hands-on workshop on En-ROADS, a climate solutions simulator developed by MIT Sloan and Climate Interactive.

This powerful tool is designed for policymakers, climate experts, advocates, and really anyone concerned about the climate crisis (which should be all of us). It lets you simulate a wide range of climate policies and interventions—such as reforestation, carbon pricing, electrification incentives, or nuclear energy development—and immediately see the projected impact through clear, dynamic visuals.

How the Post-Pandemic VC Market Is Taking Shape

I came across two interesting charts that capture from different angles how the venture capital market has cooled down after the unsustainable peak of 2021. That peak was driven by the pandemic’s digital euphoria and the flood of liquidity injected by central banks around the world.

For context, a Series Seed round is typically the first institutional funding a startup receives—usually from venture capital funds—to build a product and find early traction. A Series A round comes next, aiming to scale the business once there’s some proof of concept.

A Practical Guide to Digital Safety for Everyone

Minimalist illustration of a smartphone displaying neatly arranged app icons under the title ‘Digital Hygiene,’ symbolizing clean and organized digital practices.

Online insecurity keeps getting worse. Sophisticated groups are fully dedicated to hacking, phishing, and other digital crimes. That’s why cybersecurity is no longer optional—it’s critical.

As investors and tech builders, we often focus on innovation, but strong digital hygiene is just as important as any breakthrough. This is especially true when you consider that cybercrime is projected to cost the world more than $10 trillion annually this year, making it the third-largest economy after the U.S. and China.

In that spirit, I wanted to share this excellent post by Andrej Karpathy on digital hygiene for individuals. It’s simple, practical, and applicable to just about anyone who uses the internet (so, all of us). Worth five minutes of your time:

Investing in Puna Bio – Biotech Driving the Future of Agriculture

logo of agtech startup Puna Bio

At Dalus Capital, we are committed to investing in transformative solutions that address Latin America’s most pressing challenges. That’s why I’m excited to announce our recent investment in Puna Bio, an innovative biotechnology company from Argentina that leverages extremophile microorganisms to enhance crop yields and restore degraded soils.

The future of agriculture is at a critical juncture. By 2050, food production must increase by 60% to meet the demands of a growing global population, yet 90% of the world’s soil could be degraded. Traditional fertilizers and chemical inputs contribute to soil depletion, water pollution, and high carbon emissions. In fact, synthetic fertilizer production, derived from fossil fuels, is one of the largest sources of agricultural carbon emissions.

Imaginary Creatures

Had to share this cartoon—it exemplifies so well the anti-science moods in our current environment.

Cartoon showing a group of imaginary creatures—like a unicorn, dragon, Bigfoot, leprechaun, and mermaid—seated in a circle. The mermaid is presenting a vaccine vial seated in a chair, as if it's part of the group, highlighting the idea that the belief 'vaccines cause autism' belongs among imaginary concepts.

Correlation is not causation

Love statistics, so I have to share this chart I came across—it’s a perfect example of the classic phrase, “correlation is not causation”.

Chart showing a positive correlation between the number of metal bands per million people and average happiness scores across European countries. While the trend suggests that more metal bands are associated with higher happiness, the chart serves as a reminder that correlation doesn’t imply causation.

At first glance, the chart seems to suggest that having more metal bands per capita makes a country happier. I think we can all agree that’s not quite how it works. Maybe the band members themselves are happier, but the rest of the population? Unlikely.
