Don’t Miss the Incredible Movie Digger
Last weekend I saw the new movie Digger by the incredible, Oscar-winning Mexican director Alejandro González Iñárritu. It is a masterpiece with sharp, dark satire that frames the slow-motion tragedy of climate change through outright absurdity. I have never been a fan of Tom Cruise, but here he is marvelous and probably delivers the best performance of his career.
That same weekend, two hurricanes and a tropical storm pounded North America. It is worth highlighting that Isaias and Simon formed and matured into hurricanes at an alarming speed. This has been a record year for hurricanes in the Pacific. Although the region has always been subject to hurricanes, warmer sea temperatures caused by global warming fuel stronger, more damaging storms. Why? Because most of the heat absorbed by the planet due to greenhouse gases from fossil fuels ends up in the seas rather than the atmosphere. That could also be generating the super-strong El Niño we are seeing this year, which is another major factor driving hurricane formation.

Remembering Jane Goodall, a Titan of Conservation and Climate 🐒
The news landed last week, and it’s a profoundly sobering moment for anyone who cares about this planet: Dr. Jane Goodall has passed away at 91.
She was the pioneering primatologist and probably the top biologist of her time. Her groundbreaking discoveries—that chimpanzees use tools, have distinct personalities, and complex social lives—didn’t just change science; they forced humanity to look at itself in a new, humbler mirror. Incredibly enough, she first went to Tanzania in 1960 without a college degree. She was a young woman who dared to get up close and personal with animals most people thought were just “things.” You can read her definitive obituary here.
This news hit my wife and me especially hard because we attended her last conference, which was right here in Mexico City, the Saturday before her passing. Being in the room and hearing her voice—still sharp, still full of fire—was a powerful, final experience.

A Hands-On Tool to Understand the Climate Crisis
Recently, I attended my 30th-year MIT reunion and had the chance to hear some excellent lectures from MIT professors. One of them was a hands-on workshop on En-ROADS, a climate solutions simulator developed by MIT Sloan and Climate Interactive.
This powerful tool is designed for policymakers, climate experts, advocates, and really anyone concerned about the climate crisis (which should be all of us). It lets you simulate a wide range of climate policies and interventions—such as reforestation, carbon pricing, electrification incentives, or nuclear energy development—and immediately see the projected impact through clear, dynamic visuals.
