Why We Doubled Down on the Darwin AI Team

I’m thrilled to share that our portfolio company, Darwin AI, has closed a $4.5 million funding round led by Base10 Partners. 🚀 We at Dalus are excited to be participating in the round alongside other previous investors, doubling down on our belief in the team.

Darwin AI is building the future of business operations with AI agents, with a sharp focus on the Spanish and Portuguese-speaking markets in Latam (try them here). The traction is already undeniable: they’ve onboarded more than 300 clients across 20 countries and have surpassed $2 million in annual booked revenues.

So what exactly is an AI agent? Think of it as a digital team member, not just a chatbot. This technology is powering the future of work, which will be a hybrid team of humans and AI. Darwin’s platform is the place to orchestrate them both, freeing people from repetitive tasks to focus on the creative and strategic work that humans do best. This shift is unlocking massive productivity gains. A 2025 report from BCG, “AI at Work,” highlights that the real value of AI is generated when businesses fundamentally reshape their workflows, not just introduce new tools. This is the core of Darwin’s mission: automating the exact sales and support processes where this transformation has the greatest impact.

Darwin’s digital employees are designed to integrate seamlessly into core business functions, interacting with customers on WhatsApp, Instagram, and phone calls while handling backend data entry in CRMs and spreadsheets. The platform’s reliability is built on a framework designed to ensure high-fidelity outcomes through human audits, continuous AI testing, and sentiment analysis. Crucially, the agents operate with intelligent escalation triggers, knowing precisely when to loop in a human team member, creating a fluid, hybrid operational model.

Been There, Done That

What makes this investment special for me is the team. Darwin is led by Lautaro Schiaffino and Ezequiel Sculli, fantastic entrepreneurs who I’m also happy to call good friends.

This is our second time backing them. My fund led the Series A for their first startup, Sirena, where I had the privilege of serving on the board. Sirena solved a problem anyone in Latam could understand: using WhatsApp for business was chaotic. They built the essential software layer that made it work for companies, and in just two years, they were acquired by the publicly-traded Brazilian tech company Zenvia. A huge win, especially during the pandemic.

The Power of the Serial Entrepreneur

Now, with Darwin AI, Lauta and Eze are leveraging that experience. This points to a powerful trend I’m seeing across the region: the rise of the serial entrepreneur.

Founders on their second or third go-around have a distinct advantage:

  • A Proven Playbook: They’ve navigated the challenges of scaling a company before.
  • Deeper Networks: Their connections with talent, investors, and partners are already established.
  • Hard-Won Experience: They’ve learned lessons you can’t get from a book.

This combination dramatically increases the probability of success, and it’s a clear signal that the Latin American startup ecosystem is maturing. Investing in Darwin AI isn’t just about backing a great idea; it’s about backing a proven team that knows how to build and win.

Let Humans do Human Things” is their motto, and Darwin is making it happen. 🙌 The road ahead is incredibly exciting, and Darwin AI is a prime example of the world-class, AI-native companies being built right here in Latam.
