¿Qué haces actualmente?
Soy cofundador y Director General de Promotora Social México. Invertimos en empresas que tengan alto impacto social en personas de segmentos bajos de la población a través de productos y servicios de educación, salud y desarrollo económico. Estamos invertidos en 15 empresas y en 5 fondos de inversión. También apoyamos a los emprendedores sociales y ayudamos a fortalecer el ecosistema de inversión de impacto en México.

¿Cómo y desde cuando te involucraste en el ecosistema emprendedor en México?
Podría decir que he sido emprendedor y empresario toda mi vida. Desde el 2009 me puse la cachucha de inversionista a través de Promotora Social México. Al ver que había poco pipeline en los sectores en los que invertimos, vimos la necesidad de impulsar y apoyar el ecosistema emprendedor en México sobretodo aquellos que puedan generar alto impacto social. Buscamos soluciones comerciales para resolver problemas sociales.

¿Cómo describirías el ecosistema en México?
Desde siempre han habido oportunidades y emprendedores dispuestos a hacer floreces sus negocios en México. Sin embargo, desde hace un poco más de una década ya se ha venido hablando de la necesidad de desarrollar el concepto de ecosistema emprendedor en México. Yo diría que ese enfoque todavía esta en proceso de fortalecimiento e integración de los diferentes actores que participan en él. Sin embargo me parece que en general vamos por buen camino. Los últimos dos gobiernos federales ha sido los más pro activos en apoyar lo que se ha venido haciendo desde la iniciativa privada y la academia.

¿Cuáles son las perspectivas del ecosistema para los siguientes 12 meses?
Lo veo con buenas luces y pero también con algunas sombras. Por un lado hay fondos de inversión y algunos corporativos a la búsqueda de proyectos innovadores en diferentes áreas y por otro lado veo buenos y apasionados emprendedores por hacer sus ideas y emprendimientos cobren vida y tracción. Sin embargo el panorama económico y político no es es el más estable en este momento para el crecimiento y fortalecimiento de los nuevos negocios. Pero nunca hay momentos perfectos.

¿Cuáles son los principales retos del ecosistema? 
Me preocupan tres:

• Limitada innovación.
• Faltan proyectos de impacto en educación, agua, agro, etc.
• El miedo al fracaso.

¿Qué cambio o resultado traería los mayores beneficios al ecosistema?
Crear ambientes, comunidades y relaciones de confianza.

Describe tu día típico
Madrugo. Medito. Corro. Llevo a mis hijitas al colegio, interactúo lo más que se puedo con ellas. Platicas de pasillo con el equipo para sentir temprano los retos del día. Juntas, juntas, juntas y toda la colaboración que se pueda. Working lunchs, comidas de negocios y comidas sociales. Comités y Consejos. Asisto y participo en eventos del ecosistema emprendedor y de impacto social. Llego a leer con mis hijas. Ceno y platico con mi esposa. Leo antes de dormir.

¿Quién es tu emprendedor favorito?
Don Lorenzo Servitje. A sus 97 años todavía sigue emprendiendo, luchando y apoyando.

¿Qué libro que hayas leído recientemente recomiendas?

¿Cuales son tus metas para los próximos 12 meses?
Tengo varias, te comparto algunas que me emocionan:

1. Concretar un concepto en el que venimos trabajando desde hace algunos meses que le hemos denominado “Fabrica de Líderes Sociales“.
2. Estoy diseñando un espacio para nuestras nuevas oficinas que por lo pronto lo he llamado “PSM Co-Lab“.
3. Iniciar un proceso de reflexión estratégica para ver como podemos potenciar nuestra inversión de impacto social en México para los próximos 10 años.

¿Cómo te describirías en una palabra?
Positivo.

What are you currently working on?
On one hand, we invest in companies that are achieving a positive social impact in Mexico; Large-scale companies, which provide services to low-income communities in Mexico through their innovative solutions around education, healthcare and economic development. As of now, we have invested in 15 companies and 5 funds.

On the other, we provide non-financial support to social entrepreneurs as well as building the Impact Investing and Social Entrepreneurship ecosystem in Mexico.

When did you first become involved in Mexico’s entrepreneurial community?
Well, I’ve been an entrepreneur and businessman most of my life. However, since 2009 I put my impact investor cap on through Promotora Social Mexico. After a while, I realized that there were not enough deals flowing in our strategic sectors, or better said – there were NONE -, that’s when we saw the need to create an enabling environment and supporting infrastructure to promote a culture around social entrepreneurship and impact investing.  We’re always looking for innovative ways to use business as a force of good.

How would you describe the entrepreneurial ecosystem in Mexico?
There have always been opportunities and entrepreneurs willing to make their businesses flourish in Mexico. However, a little more than a decade ago, there has been this on-going conversation about the need to develop the entrepreneurial ecosystem in Mexico. I would say that this approach is still in the process of strengthening and integrating the different actors involved in it, and I believe that overall we are on track. The last 2 federal governments have been truly proactive in supporting what has been done by the private sector and academia.

What is your perspective on the entrepreneurial environment for the next 12 months?
I see it lots of positives and a few negatives. On one hand, there are VC funds as well as some corporations in search of innovative projects in different areas and on the other hand, I see well-intentioned and passionate entrepreneurs working to make their ideas and projects come to life and gain traction. However, the economic and political landscape is not the most stable at this time for new business. But then again, you’ll never find the perfect one.

What are the main challenges facing the entrepreneurial sector? 
I am most concerned with three:

• Lack of innovation.
• A high concentration of enterprises in just a few sectors. For example, in Fintech. We’re not seeing as much opportunities in the housing, transportation, water access & sanitation and agribusiness, sectors.
• Fear of failure.

What kind of changes or desired results would be most beneficial for the entrepreneurial sector?
To create environments, communities but most importantly relationships based on trust all across the sector.

Can you describe for us your typical day?
I’m an early bird. I meditate and exercise first thing in the morning. Then I take my little girls to school, trying to spend as much quality time as possible with them. At work, I enjoy having a small chat with each one of the team members to get a better sense of the missions ahead.  Meetings, meetings, meetings, as well as all the collaboration that is needed. Working lunches, business lunches and social lunches. Committees and Executive Boards. I also like to attend and participate in events related to the social entrepreneurship and impact-investing ecosystem. I try to get home as early as possible, to read a story to my kids. We have dinner, and I have a conversation with my wife. I usually end the day with a good read.

Who is your favorite Mexican or international investor?
Don Lorenzo Servitje. At 97 years old, he is still investing and fighting for what he believes in.

What fiction or non-fiction book have your recently read that you could recommend?
The True North by Bill George.

What film?
The Fencer, produced by Finland, Estonia and Germany.

What are your goals, if you would like to share them with us, for the next 12 months?
I have various, but there are some that I am particularly passionate about:

• I want to continue developing an idea that we’ve been working on for several months, which we’ve named the “Social Leaders Factory.”
• I’m designing a special space for our new offices that will be called the “PSM Co-Lab.”
• And I’m also starting a new process of strategic review, to envision how might we improve the potential of our social impact investments in Mexico for the next ten years.
